Some studies link diet soda to diabetes and heart disease

Although diet soda pop has no calories, sugar or fat, it has been linked to the development of type 2 diabetes and heart complaints in several studies.

Studies have shown that just one serving of an artificially sweetened beverage per day is associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes 8 – 13 (22Trusted Source, 23Trusted Source).

A study of 64,850 women noted that naturally sweetened beverages were associated with a 21-fold increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Still, it still had half the threat associated with regular sticky drinks. Again, a recent review sets up that diet soda pop is not associated with an increased threat of diabetes. Also, another study concluded that the health status of any organization, weight changes and actors’ body mass index can be explained (28 trusted sources, 29 trusted sources).

Diet soda pop has also been linked to increased risk of high blood pressure and heart complaints.

A review of four studies including 227,254 people found that for every serving of naturally sweetened libations per day, there was a 9 increased risk of high blood pressure. Other studies have set up similar results (30Trusted Source, 31Trusted Source, 32Trusted Source).

Also, one study linked diet soda pop to a slight increase in the risk of stroke, but this was based on experimental data only ( 33Trusted Source ).

As most of the studies were experimental, it may be that the association could be interpreted differently. It’s possible that people who were previously at risk for diabetes and high blood pressure chose to drink more diet soda pop ( 24Trusted Source , 34Trusted Source , 35Trusted Source ).

More direct experimental findings are warranted to determine if there is a true causal relationship between diet soda pop and increases in blood sugar or blood pressure.
